As a designer this is my responsibility.

It is no news that we have to rethink and renew the way we use resources, materials, manufacturing, printing, logistics, recycling. I am continuously learning about current developments concerning sustainability, which is a very complex and often scientific topic. Exchange and cooperation with experts deepen my knowledge and is crucial in advising my clients.

Customer’s demand for sustainability is increasing constantly and needs to be met wholeheartedly and profoundly. The market is very receptive for new packaging aesthetics that contribute to a more sustainable product, eg. reduction of printing colors, foils, labels.

REDUCTION OF PACKAGING MATERIAL

REDUCTION OF PACKAGING MATERIAL

  • Product quantity and packaging size match (no cheat packs).
  • Primary packaging containers like tubes and jars do not necessarily need secondary packaging like paper folding boxes.
  • If folding boxes are needed they can serve as shipping containers for sending out  online orders.
  • Caps and lids are as small as possible.
  • Offer refill pouches that contain large product quantities.

The design study ‚yeo skincare‘ showcases sustainable packaging solutions for a mass market brand. I developed a cardboard holder for the hand cream tube that serves as a material saving alternative to a folding box. It keeps the tube in an upright position on retail shelves and provides space for product information, ingredients, application, legal texts, recommendations of other yeo products.

OPTIMIZATION OF RECYCLING PROPERTIES

OPTIMIZATION OF
RECYCLING PROPERTIES

  • Re-useable lightweight bottles made from recycled aluminium: 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in circulation today because it has a high consumer recycling rate, and it can be endlessly reprocessed and reformed without any major loss of metal quality. Aluminum also resists corrosion and has a lower melting point than glass, making it less energy intensive to recycle. Recycling aluminium only requires 5% energy compared to production of new aluminium. (1)
  • Labels on packaging containers can reduce the recyclability significantly, that is why they should not cover more then 40% of the container.
  • Containers, lids & labels are made from the same material ideally. If they are not: Engage the customer to separate these components before discharging.
  • Use of sustainable adhesive (cradle-to-cradle® certified) to attach labels to containers.

SOURCES OF PACKAGING MATERIAL

SOURCES OF PACKAGING MATERIAL

SOURCES OF PACKAGING MATERIAL

  • Containers such as jars are made from recycled biodegradable material PLA (polylactic acid). Organic waste is the source, it is transformed to lactic acid through fermentation and is 100% biodegradable in industrial composting. PLA can be chemically recycled to monomer which can be used to manufacture virgin PLA with no loss of original properties (cradle-to-cradle® recycling). (2)
  • Labels & cartons made from unbleached grass paper. Grass is a fast growing alternative to wood as a source for paper production. The production of grass fiber takes place purely mechanically without chemical processing. Compared to virgin fiber pulp from wood it causes around 95% less CO2 emissions, requires hardly any water and only little energy. (3)
  • Black as sole printing color because it can be obtained from algae instead of mineral oil. At large-scale production, algae black pigments are carbon negative because algae absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide. (4)

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

  • Cradle to Cradle® describes the safe and potentially infinite circulation of materials and nutrients in cycles. Cradle to Cradle Certified® is the global standard for products that are safe, circular and responsibly made. All constituents are chemically harmless and recyclable. Waste as we know it today and which is generated according to the pre-existing take-make-waste model will no longer exist, only useful nutrients. (5) (6)
